Summary

"A couple who broke up months ago make a pact to pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry。 Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college-they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls。 Except, now-for reasons they're still not discussing-they don't。 They broke up six months ago。 And still haven't told their best friends。 Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group's yearly getaway for the last decade。 Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blue week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most。 Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other。 Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they'll all have together in this place。 They can't stand to break their friends' hearts, and so they'll play their parts。 Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show。 It's a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses)。 After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week。。。in front of those who know you best?"--

I loved this so much。 I can’t decide if it will top Book Lovers in my Emily Henry list, but it definitely is up there。 This one isn’t just about a second-chance romance, it’s about family dynamics and deep, meaningful lifelong friendships as well。 I messaged some friends to say, um, is it normal to sob at the end of a romance?! (In a good way!)

4。5 ☀️ Emily Henry has done it again!!! As y’all know I love a good second chance romance, but what I didn’t expect is how relatable other parts of this book would be。 Navigating adult friendships, finding a career that makes you happy/finding self-worth, living up to your loved one’s expectations 🥺 so much is tackled in this wonderful book!

I'm a sucker for characters who communicate。 Like it's literally sexier than any smut I've ever read。 And mannnnnnn does Emily Henry deliver。 It seems like everyone is writing second-chance romance now, but this is next level。 It takes fake dating and turns it into fake "still engaged", but we all know that Harri and Wyn still love each other。 Add in a lobster festival and a chaotically codependent friend group, and you know that it's gonna be GOOOOOOOD。 Julia Whelan also kills it as usual - her I'm a sucker for characters who communicate。 Like it's literally sexier than any smut I've ever read。 And mannnnnnn does Emily Henry deliver。 It seems like everyone is writing second-chance romance now, but this is next level。 It takes fake dating and turns it into fake "still engaged", but we all know that Harri and Wyn still love each other。 Add in a lobster festival and a chaotically codependent friend group, and you know that it's gonna be GOOOOOOOD。 Julia Whelan also kills it as usual - her gruff cinnamon roll man voice gets me every time。 But what's even better is the personal growth that Harri goes through and all of the casual mental health rep。 As someone with late diagnosed depression, it was so hard to realize that life isn't this tough for everyone else in the world。 I felt so freaking SEEN。 Ultimately everyone and their mom is going to be screaming about this book for the next year, but I'm telling you that it's worth it。 *Thank you to PRH Audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest review* 。。。more

Tiptoeing the line of uproarious laughter and unstoppable tears, Emily Henry's Happy Place is filled to the brim with both rose-tinted memories and brittle shards of reality。 Following a freshly broken-up couple determined to keep up the facade of their relationship during their friends' last summer hurrah, this book is a stark reminder of ticking time, and suggests that the resolution to pain might just be letting go of what hurts you the most, even if you love it (or them) just the same。 origi Tiptoeing the line of uproarious laughter and unstoppable tears, Emily Henry's Happy Place is filled to the brim with both rose-tinted memories and brittle shards of reality。 Following a freshly broken-up couple determined to keep up the facade of their relationship during their friends' last summer hurrah, this book is a stark reminder of ticking time, and suggests that the resolution to pain might just be letting go of what hurts you the most, even if you love it (or them) just the same。 original review: i want to laugh but i also want to cry。 currently am waiting for the hurt and heart to set in。。。and seeing which one lasts。。。 full review tk (once i am less of an emotional mess) 。。。more

Thank you @PRHAudio for the gifted audiobook!I don't know if this would technically be classified as a relationship in crisis, but I'm saying it is and I think it's becoming my #1 trope。 I really liked Harriet and Wyn。 I loved their romance too。 I'm saying this is a relationship in crisis because I think too often in a second chance romance, it starts to feel too instant lovey。 This was familiarity, yet also a lot of hurt behind it。I was also surprised I liked the friendship story as well。 I thi Thank you @PRHAudio for the gifted audiobook!I don't know if this would technically be classified as a relationship in crisis, but I'm saying it is and I think it's becoming my #1 trope。 I really liked Harriet and Wyn。 I loved their romance too。 I'm saying this is a relationship in crisis because I think too often in a second chance romance, it starts to feel too instant lovey。 This was familiarity, yet also a lot of hurt behind it。I was also surprised I liked the friendship story as well。 I think I'm just turning into a sucker for vulnerability so seeing it all around was refreshing。 The audiobook was great and I'll be purchasing a physical copy to mark up because there were multiple places I wanted to highlight。 I can confidently say this is my first or second most favorite Emily Henry book (I'm not sure if it would knock Beach Read down a spot)。 。。。more

I could not put this one down! I was consumed by this story and at the end of every chapter I would tell myself “just 1 more” and keep going。 Emily Henry truly has a gift。 She created this beautiful ride or die found family and sent my emotions all over the place。 The mix of women’s fiction and romance was just right and I was laughing, swooning, and shedding a tear or two。 Readers really have to work for that second chance romance HEA and my heart took quite the beating as Harriet and Wyn’s fri I could not put this one down! I liked this book, but I didn't love it。 I may get vilified for my unpopular opinion, but I thought it was pretty basic。 Although I liked Harriet and Wyn, I didn't love them together。 They were missing a level of chemistry that I need in my romance books。 I think some of that may be due to the fact that a big part of this book was about their friend group。 There were lots of scenes with all the friends and I wanted more scenes with just Harriet and Wyn。 It's a fine balance of using lively suppor I liked this book, but I didn't love it。 I may get vilified for my unpopular opinion, but I thought it was pretty basic。 Although I liked Harriet and Wyn, I didn't love them together。 They were missing a level of chemistry that I need in my romance books。 I think some of that may be due to the fact that a big part of this book was about their friend group。 There were lots of scenes with all the friends and I wanted more scenes with just Harriet and Wyn。 It's a fine balance of using lively supporting characters to make the story interesting and fun while also giving the main characters enough time on the page to show their connection。 I liked that Wyn wasn't a perfectly formed hero。 He had some bumps along the way in his life and he didn't ever feel like he could succeed at anything。 Wyn felt the weight of his self-imposed expectations that he thought his family and friends had for him and that was sometimes at the detriment of his mental health。 I loved that he was on a journey to finding things he loved and defining success in his own way。Steam level: 🔥🔥⚠️: claustrophobia, death of a parent, grief, Parkinson's, depressionI received a complimentary audiobook from the publisher。 。。。more

Probably going to leave this one unrated because it honestly was really my cup of tea but I’m sure others will love it as much as Henry’s precious books。 I think I would’ve been much more into it if the focus was shifted more towards Cleo, Sabrina, and Harriet spending time together and their relationship—vs what felt like a lot more focus on Harriet and Wyn。 Obviously this is a romance so that make sense, I just felt more interested and compelled by the bits focusing on transitioning into adult Probably going to leave this one unrated because it honestly was really my cup of tea but I’m sure others will love it as much as Henry’s precious books。 I think I would’ve been much more into it if the focus was shifted more towards Cleo, Sabrina, and Harriet spending time together and their relationship—vs what felt like a lot more focus on Harriet and Wyn。 Obviously this is a romance so that make sense, I just felt more interested and compelled by the bits focusing on transitioning into adulthood, changing friendships, and basically mid-twenties to early-thirties crisis and change era haha。 。。。more

I finished this book like a week ago, but I haven't been able to write a review because I just don't think I have the letters, words, sentences, thoughts, to really build any sort of concept to what this book made me feel。 One thing I will say is that I felt like Emily Henry really wrote this book for me。 Yes, the romance was top notch and I ached for the characters。 One of my least favorite character traits in a book character is when they are a people pleaser to the detriment of themselves (he I finished this book like a week ago, but I haven't been able to write a review because I just don't think I have the letters, words, sentences, thoughts, to really build any sort of concept to what this book made me feel。 One thing I will say is that I felt like Emily Henry really wrote this book for me。 Yes, the romance was top notch and I ached for the characters。 One of my least favorite character traits in a book character is when they are a people pleaser to the detriment of themselves (hello inner self, pot meet kettle), however, the way that Harriet is written is so believable that I just basically cried the whole time。 Not only is Harriet a people pleaser, she's also nonconfrontational which gives the story an interesting layer when it comes to the relationships she has with her friends。 This book isn't just about the romance (although I will say that Wyn quickly swooped to my top two favorite of Emily Henry's men)。 This is a story about friendship and family and how those relationships change through time and distance。 I felt this whole part in my soul。 I just want to bottle this book up and open it every once in awhile so I can just remind myself what this book made me feel。 So yeah uh。。。 read this book, it was alright。 。。。more

I was very kindly given an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley and Penguin Books UK。 3。5/5。The overwhelming thought I have coming out of reading this is just。。。what was the point? I'm genuinely struggling to find a reason why I just read 400 pages of a predictable book about two people who can't communicate and find reasons not to do that over and over again because of 'emotions' for said 400 pages。 The story does not justify the page length at all。 Emily Henry is a great writer。 She has a tendency I was very kindly given an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley and Penguin Books UK。 3。5/5。The overwhelming thought I have coming out of reading this is just。。。what was the point? I'm genuinely struggling to find a reason why I just read 400 pages of a predictable book about two people who can't communicate and find reasons not to do that over and over again because of 'emotions' for said 400 pages。 The story does not justify the page length at all。 Emily Henry is a great writer。 She has a tendency to overwrite chapters with dialogue that adds nothing to the plot and infuriate me as I twiddle my thumbs waiting for something to happen, but she's a great writer。 But it took me FOREVER to actually get into this book and I think it's because, for the first 30% or so。。。nothing happens。 It felt like such an effort to pick this up - I actually forced myself to power through until I got to a point where I was actually interested in finding out what happened。 Much of 'Happy Place' is built around the fact that this couple - who haven't told their friends they've broken up - are forcefully reunited at a holiday home they all stayed at。 This is a great conflict, but it's not played upon nearly enough to be interesting。 They pretend a lot in front of their friends, but it's largely just grinding on each other and calling each other 'honey'。 There were so many opportunities for comedy that just got ignored in favour of irritating the other person。 The side characters are the saving grace of this book - and by far the more interesting。 I think choosing Wyn and Harriet for this book was the wrong choice。 But Sabrina and Parth? The child of divorce getting married and losing her happy place but micro-managing one last week there - now THAT is an interesting romance / women's fiction book! I'll say it as a warning - this book plays very heavily on the 'we don't communicate and therefore that's conflict' trope。 Which I dislike with a passion。 Even from the beginning, the whole break up these two went through was entirely miscommunicated。 And even though it redeems itself slightly as Harriet explores her own flaws and past traumas influencing present conflict, it could have literally been solved with a conversation。 I think it would've gotten us to the same place in the end - which, tbh, we all knew where it was going。 And when we finally got to the crux of the 'why we broke up' argument, I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room。 It was so。。。bland。 Like。 It was all miscommunication, of two people not just going away, cooling down and talking like damn ADULTS, but just deciding to implode their lives。Harriet and Wyn just felt like teenagers。 These are not grown adults - they're sixteen year olds。 Maybe that's why I didn't like them。 Something I've realised I also have an issue with in these books is the sex is so。。。tame。 Like。 I don't think it's ever referred to as 'sex'。 All those scenes are painted in metaphors or vague language that make you THINK they're sex scenes, but without anything particularly graphic。 Which is also something I really don't like in books。 If they're going to do it, just do it。 Don't beat around the bush (pun most certainly intended)。 I loved 'Book Lovers'。 I loved 'People We Meet on Vacation'。 I hated 'Beach Read'。 I think 'Happy Place' falls somewhere in-between those two。 Not bad, but now that this is the fourth book I've read by this author, I can see the familiar tropes, the same patterns, the same kinds of couples being put together and forced to play out trauma and I'm getting bored。 Honestly, if you'd changed any of the names in this book with ones from her different books, I would not have been able to tell the difference。 The heroines are always smart, a little bit cool and filled with trauma, the men always also filled with trauma, brooding and terrible at communicating。 I don't know。 I think the allure is starting to wear off。 'Happy Place' is not a bad book。 I just don't think it was particularly original or interesting。 。。。more

But the more we got to see glimpses of their past relationship, the fonder my feelings toward him grew。 It’s obvious that leaving her hurt him just as much。 While Alex, Gus, and Charlie, Henry’s previous male protagonists, were all written beautifully unique, there’s a depth behind Wyn that solidifies his spot as my favorite book boyfriend。 Oh。 My。 God。 The banter。 I always knew Emily excelled at it, but good Lord is it amplified in this book。 It was just non-stop between the two。 It was like watching a tennis match, or what I imagine it would be like。 After all, I’m not one for sports。 But from the moment they met, it was written in the stars。 I stand on the ground that friends are even better lovers。 Their dynamic pulled at all my heartstrings and left my mind going in so many different directions。 They are the literary definition of the word soulmates。 I don’t think I’ve seen two people that belong together more than they do。 Their love is overpowering in a way I so rarely see on the page。 I could feel the desperation behind their separation。 Everything about it was palpable。 I wanted to walk straight into their world and somehow get them to come to their senses。 But all good things take time。 I think this is what Leo Tolstoy meant when he wrote War and Peace。 It was war, but there was peace。 I am an advocate for excessive angst and let me tell you, miss Henry absolutely served。 All of the second-chance romance girlies are absolutely thriving right now。 She is my Michelangelo。 Everything she writes is pure gold。 There were so many moments where I thought to myself, oh they’re gonna go crazy over this。 I don’t mean that casually。 I mean the book community is going to go feral, as they should。 I mean, let’s get real。 What is in the water she’s drinking that gives her these magical capabilities? Consider this my written permission, or rather my formal proposal, for her to write my eulogy。 The only words I want on my gravestone are the words of Emily Henry。 Shoutout to her for properly depicting mental illness on page。 She never uses it as a guilt harboring tactic。 There’s always a purpose behind it and while it does motivate some of the characters' choices, it doesn’t own the wheel, driving them wherever it pleases。 She put so much care into her research, and perhaps even personal experience, and it reads that way。 As someone that struggles with some of these diagnoses’, it makes me feel a little less alone knowing it isn’t a flaw that my favorite characters would see right through, but rather a unifying aspect that makes us stronger than we already are。 Her portrayal of not only loneliness, but silence, brought me to the edge。 It’s the kind of pain you only know how to describe after experiencing it。 “My best friends taught me a new kind of quiet, the peaceful stillness of knowing each other so well you don’t need to fill the space。 And a new kind of loud: noise as a celebration, as the overflow of joy at being alive, here, now。”The friendships in this is what sealed the deal for me。 To my core, I am a found family lover and naturally, being the all-knowing entity she is, Emily Henry delivered。 I have such a deep appreciation for the way they started as a group of three and ended as a group of six。 Their partners weren’t see as enemies coming to conquer land, but rather allies。 The more the merrier。 Each and every one of them added so much value to the group and I can’t imagine a world where all six of them aren’t together, tied by some invisible string。 The writing is of the same caliber, even better if that’s even possible, but there’s a sense of realness about it that makes it resonate all the more with readers like myself。 It was all about perspective and the connections we share on both platonic and romantic levels。 Those acknowledgements made me absolutely sob。 It’s clear she appreciates all of her readers, down to the very last one。 As an avid 4。9 star rater and one-time reader, I can say with ease that this is not only a five star read, but one that I wanted to re-read not even a quarter of the way through the book。 I want to inject it into my bloodstream, tattoo it on my soul。 My world is no longer spinning because it only revolves around this book and these characters。 If this were the last book I were to read during my time on earth, or even the only book, I’d consider it a blessing。 I hope Happy Place does to Emily Henry what Midnights did to Taylor Swift。 I’m talking it better be at the top of every best-seller list to ever exist。 In every universe, this deserves to be everyone’s favorite book。 I would like to amend my holy grail literature recommendations to put this at the top of the list。If I could only describe this book in one sentence, it would be this… "The feeling of being so grateful to have something worth missing。”Thank you to Berkley Romance and Emily Henry for providing me with this ARC。 As always, all opinions are (proudly) my own and are not influenced by early access to this title。 。。。more

WTF? I don't buy it。Second, the pacing was off。 Some parts were sloooow, like the flashbacks, and it hurts the overall impression。 I actually skimmed some parts because it felt like the story was stalling。 The flashbacks didn't work at all。 Third, I didn't feel the chemistry between any of the friends och couples。 I was told a lot of times how much the friends loved each other and about their boring games (lame) and I became bored。 I'm sorry, but no, this was not for me。 。。。more

I’m not even sure where to start with this book。 It was amazing。 Absolutely phenomenal。 This was also my first time reading Emily Henry。 I was told by friends that all of her books are feel good with happy endings。 Let me tell you, this book ripped my heart out and danced on it till I could barely take anymore。 I don’t think I’ve had a book make me cry THIS hard。 It’s got a little bit of spice but it’s not too bad。 Beautifully written and wonderfully told。 I’m pretty sure I cried for more than h I’m not even sure where to start with this book。 It was amazing。 Absolutely phenomenal。 This was also my first time reading Emily Henry。 I was told by friends that all of her books are feel good with happy endings。 Let me tell you, this book ripped my heart out and danced on it till I could barely take anymore。 I don’t think I’ve had a book make me cry THIS hard。 It’s got a little bit of spice but it’s not too bad。 Beautifully written and wonderfully told。 I’m pretty sure I cried for more than half the book。 I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a second chance romance。 。。。more

Emily Henry knocks it out of the park, once again! I'm in thrall to her talent and ability to melt my cold, dark heart。 Every freakin time! 'Happy Place' is about enduring friendships, the imperfect nature of family and the loves (and lives) we choose for ourselves。 The setting is idyllic and the characters well-considered。 I enjoyed every moment。 More please!  Emily Henry knocks it out of the park, once again!
